The Mask
Name: Thayet of Conté
Age: 38
Place of birth: Sarain
Gender: Female
Home: The Palace, Corus, Tortall
Position: Queen
Cannon or original: Cannon - in a way, though not on that list...
Face claim: Amy Lee
Appearance: Thayet is not considered the most beautiful woman in Tortall for nothing, her flawless ivory skin contrasts attractively with her black hair. Her eyes are hazel in colour. She has a low, clear voice and excellent posture. Her nose (which, if one feels charitable, can be called “strong”) should detract from her beauty, but does not. Some people have all the luck.
She stands at 5'8", and as expected of the Queen of Tortall, dresses immaculately and carries herself with confidence and grace.
Personality: As the founder of the Queen’s Riders and several schools for commoners across Tortall, Thayet is more liberal than might be expected from a Warlord’s daughter – but given her mother’s background the strength she exhibits is explained. An intelligent woman with a gift for diplomacy and that elusive quality poise, Thayet was really an ideal queen for Jonathan to choose (certainly better than some of his…precious options). Her sense of humor is understated, and at times she seems more practical than anything else. Gods be thanked, because in the beginning her husband certainly wasn’t.
Thayet’s temper – when roused – is frigid, not hot, and she doesn’t mind making things worse than they are. If there was a disagreement, she doesn’t want to see you. While not annoyed easily, she feels no obligation to let people know where they stepped wrong, and lets them have the full blast of her temper without telling the object of her wrath. This is not as unreasonable as it sounds, because Thayet only let’s loose her temper on people close to her – she is a queen after all, queens are not allowed to let their tempers rule their courts.
If she is a little vain, it is not without reason. And vanity can be good in a queen – it ensures that she looks her best. Thayet is occasionally prone to dramatic gestures, for example ruining a pink tissue dress that could feed two or three families. She’s a good strategist, but if she feels she must do something, she sometimes doesn’t stop to think of the consequences.
History: Born Thayet jian Wilima in Sarain, the unwanted daughter of the Warlord and his K’miri wife Kalasin, Thayet grew up knowing she would only ever become a way to reinforce someone else’s claim to her father’s throne. Her mother made sure that Thayet knew about K’miri culture as well, her few friends growing up were the K’miri bodyguards the Warlord had allowed his wife. When her father started to pass laws severely limiting the rights available to the K’mir tribes, Thayet and Kalasin tried to reason with him as the offences – already bad – grew worse. The Warlord refused to listen, however, and Kalasin committed suicide to prove her point to the world. Thayet’s father also died, and the country became a battleground for the contenders to the throne.
Thayet did the sensible thing and ran away with her bodyguard Buri, picking up a group of teenagers and children along the way until she joined up with Alanna, Liam, and Coram while they were traveling to find the Dominion Jewel.
After leaving the teenagers at a convent in Rachia, Thayet and Buri went to the Roof of the World and then to Tortall. Thayet and Jonathan (then awaiting his coronation) fell in love and married the winter after his coronation. Thayet founded the Queen’s Riders not long after, as well as introducing The Royal Ladies, a collection of noble women who travel with her that ride and shoot well enough to defend themselves. She used these groups to introduce the idea of more freedom for noble women, helped along by the legalizing of Lady Knights once more. Thayet’s other major political action was the founding of schools for the children of commoners, one of her original goals in coming to Tortall. She and Jonathan have two children, one of which is a knight, and the other, Annie, is a squire.
Rp sample: Thayet excited the room, sighing loudly. She was tired of arguing with Annie. Annie wanted to be able to have more freedom as a Squire... And Thayet just wasn't ready for that. She knew that Annie thought that she was being unfair, but she wasn't. A lot depended on Annie - though she didn't know it. Annie would be the one that would help them secure better relations with their neighbouring countries, through marriage if need be.
She shook her head, but no matter. Annie had to understand. Even though there was a war and all of Annie's friends were going, Annie didn't realize just how much more dangerous it would be for her. Annie thought that they were trying to lesson her ability as a Squire, no, they were trying to keep her from getting kidnapped! Why couldn't she see that all that Thayet and Jon had done was to keep the second-in-line to the throne safe. Annie's older brother had to go to the front. He had to show his men that he wasn't afraid, to prove to them that they would make it through... but Annie... Annie was different.
Thayet understood what Annie was feeling, in a way Thayet's youth was what Annie wanted. The freedom of movement, people not caring where she went... but it wasn't fun.
With another sigh, this one much quieter, she headed to the area of the palace that she knew was where Jon would be.
